Welcome to the third installment in a four-part series titled Managed Forest Fundamentals.

The four fundamentals are:

  1. A Provincial Regulatory Model
  2. The Managed Forest Council
  3. Key Environmental Protections
  4. Incentives for Landowners

Inspired by the realization that most people aren’t as familiar with the Managed Forest Program as we are, our first post set out to shed some light on the foundations of the provincial regulatory model. In our second post, we worked to overcome any confusion between the Private Forest Landowners Association (PFLA) and the Managed Forest Council (MFC) by highlighting the distinctions between a non-profit advocacy organization and a regulatory agency.

Our third post addresses misconceptions about the protection of key public environmental values on land within the Managed Forest Program by emphasising the legislation and regulations in place to protect public environmental values.

All forest owners within the Managed Forest Program commit to:

  • Protect fish and fish habitat
  • Protect water quality
  • Recognize, and through agreement with the provincial government, protect critical wildlife habitat where it cannot be achieved on Crown land alone
  • Grow, harvest and reforest trees
  • Conserve soil

Private forest land outside of the Managed Forest Program is not subject to the same regulations. The program creates results-based forest management that addresses key public environmental values, while preserving the unique management objectives of each forest owner.

The tables below indicate the acts and regulations, along with the agency and activities, associated with each key environmental protection. The list is not exhaustive.
